Ingeniously staged and you will smartly dialogued, it has no higher complications when you look at the life style down its incredibly ugly label.” [ 8 ]

Cobb), and you will a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) has worked in the gambling establishment and dated a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). Brand new caustically epigrammatic script, the latest cast’s suavely controlled body gestures of love and danger, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can stylishly cocky images (and their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious yet detailed spectacle a hidden vintage of your own style.” [ 10 ]

As the area pursue a common pattern, the brand new characterizations is actually new and performances good enough so you’re able to overbalance. Dialogue is terse and topical, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney reach. Strange camera bases appear on occasion so you can intensify interest and you will momentarily stop the attention. Its generally an issue of enjoying Mr. Powell go through his paces fashionably while a giant shed off stars and you will performers promote your typical support. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable absolutely nothing lady whom brings out new finest in your and you can Ellen Received is the sleek and you will slinky vixen who gets your towards jams. Thomas Gomez is actually greasy given that villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does a different sort of able concert tour given that a tired police inspector who in the end shuts the fact. A great amount of sipping and you may smoking is completed by most of the concerned.” [ twelve ]
